Super Nanny???Did anyone else catch the Super Nanny episode last night? The family consisted of a young mother who lived with her parents and was the unfortunate stereotype of a young mother. It was odd because the end of the show didn't have any sort of finality to it. The mother was moving out to live in a different state with her boyfriend and children and that was the end of it. Nothing seemed to be accomplished in regard to the behavior of the children because the whole focus was on the mother. That aspect was definately a problem, to be sure but was there any point to this episode at all??? It's also ridiculous that this was their first episode involving a young mother. It's like a show following around a young black man who is constantly in trouble with the law or something...just didn't seem right to begin with. |
Re: Super Nanny???
I only saw a second of it while I was visiting my parents (they have cable). In the scene I saw a young woman and an older woman talking to the nanny. I was surprised, cause from what I've seen of the show the nanny only helps families that have young kids. I suppose that little burp I saw makes more sense now.
It's really unfortunate that reality shows tend to showcase the worst of the worst cases they receive. As my dad says, he watches those shows and ends up feeling better about himself cause he's, "not that messed up". I hate hearing these kinds of things, cause, everyone's got issues. Maybe they're not addicted to drugs or a shopaholic with thousands in debt, but everyone can work on their life to make it more manageable and smooth for themselves and all those around them.
Bitch magazine had a good article about the nanny show in their consumerist issue... the one before this newest one. It was good and touch on what you were talking about with showcases stereotypes and undermining real issues that rest within the families they visit. For example, in one episode (from what the magazine stated) the mom was portrayed as not being able to keep the house managed properly. The mum mentioned how her husband did little around the house, but the nanny never addressed it, expecting the mum to pick up the slack.
blah.
Re: Super Nanny???
I just watched it online, and I didn't think it was that bad. They didn't point out the youngness of the mother and use it as an excuse, they just addressed the fact that she wasn't parenting her kids. This show is always about how terrible the parents are, that's the point of the show. It reminds me of one show they had with a mother who refused to stop spanking her kids for every infraction.
Re: Super Nanny???
I do think it's unfortunate that they are feeding into the idea that "young parent" = lazy or irresponsible. The only young parent representative they have on this show HAS to be the stereotype?
Re: Super Nanny???
If only Ariel Gore could do a reality show like this, haha, it would be so awesome.
Re: Super Nanny???
Yeah, but everything about this show is feeding into negativity.
