Books for mixed race step families

I'm looking for children's books featuring a family or families that have children from the same mother (or father) who are different races. I've found lots of books about mixed race families in which children are adopted, but I'm looking for something where the kids have the same mom (or dad) and a brother or sister with a different color of skin.

My kids are both caucasion, as am I, but I will be giving birth to a mixed race child, and I want to find a story or stories with a similar family. With or without a step parent, I don't care about that aspect as much.

There are tons and tons of books about step families, adoption, homosexual parents, etc, but I have a hard time finding any book at all with a father and mother with different colors of skin.

Re: Books for mixed race step families

Well, I managed to find a few books that seem really good for biracial families, but I haven't found any for biracial step families. In case anyone is interested, I found:

Black is Brown is Tan, about a black mother and white father and thier children.

I'm Your Peanut Butter Brother, about a biracial child with a white mother and black father wondering what his new sibling will look like.

All The Colors of the Earth, a beautiful book about all the different colors children come in.

I thought those three books were pretty good.

Re: Books for mixed race step families

I was curious - I hope you find something. I've read Black is Brown is Tan; I thought it sort of promoted "color-blindness," but there's such a dearth of children's books with biracial families, not to talk about biracial stepfamilies.

Re: Books for mixed race step families

Are you looking for books that specifically deal with the issue of race? Or just books that feature biracial families? Also, I don't remember how old your kids are - what target age/reading level are you looking for?

Re: Books for mixed race step families

I'm mostly looking for books featuring biracial families. My kids are five and nine.

Re: Books for mixed race step families

I don't think black is brown is tan encourages color blindness, although the title seems like it would. They talk about the different colors of the people in the family using metaphores, like, "chocolate mama, chocolate up this milk!" I think it's more a focus on love and family unity, and the beauty of the different colors of the race.

Re: Books for mixed race step families

I found this book on Amazon, though it's more about how families can be different:
The Family Book by Todd Parr

Re: Books for mixed race step families

I love Todd Parr and we have The Family Book, but I think it might be too young for your kids. If you're interested though I can post the relevant passages. I know in the one where it mentions stepparents and stepsiblings the woman in the picture is a different colour than the man and 2 kids.

Sorry, I should have thought to mention that the first time I read this thread. At the time I went on amazon because they always have suggestions of similar books so it's easier to find things that way... But I didn't find anything. What a pain! Maybe you will be the first to write one.

Re: Books for mixed race step families

I'm already working on one!

Re: Books for mixed race step families

Off the top of my head, The Hello Goodbye Window (http://www.amazon.com/Hello-Goodbye-Window-Norton-Juster/dp/0786809140) might be a nice book for the five year old. It does not explicitly deal with race, but it's a lovely book and it does show a mixed race family.

Also, a quick google search yielded these links, which might be helpful, though I haven't looked through them to thoroughly:
