Maternity clothes and alternatives? So do you guys wear actual mat clothes or do you try to improvise them?

Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
I wear stretchy pants that can fall below my belly, and bigger shirts or dresses that fall below the seam of my pants. I'm really small, I've never found any maternity clothes that even came close to fitting me. Those soft, stretchy yoga pants and a stretchy, flowy dress work best for me.
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
With both pregnancies, I wore non-maternity clothes for as long as possible, simply because it didn't make sense to me to spend any more money on clothing than I needed to. This time, though, I've outgrown even some of my maternity clothes, so wearing regular clothes for the entire pregnancy just wasn't an option. I've had good luck finding maternity clothes at used clothing stores and consignment shops for cheap.
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
I wore scrubs because they were really cheap. I also wore the same purple dress pretty much every day. I had one maternity shirt and that was nice to have.
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
Ugh I hated trying to get dressed while I was preggo lol. I found maternity jeans on sale for $20 at jcpenney, bought 2 pairs and pretty much switched them the rest of my pregnancy, throwing in some sweatpants other times. I bought a pack of white tees and a pack of white beaters (in a size bigger than my normal) and that's mostly what I wore. A lot of my tank tops from before still fit for most of the time so i would just layer that under my shirts that were getting too short so that also worked for a while.
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
I HATE HATE HATE HATE Maternity Clothing. And being in Canada, we have even less options than our American friends. Its Motherhood Maternity, or Thyme Maternity. Thyme is uber-expensive. Motherhood is less expensive, but still over-priced, considering that the clothing is all polyester and hideous!!!!
I have had to buy a lot of Maternity clothing for work...being that I work in an office, and have to look somewhat professional. But at home, I do not ever wear maternity clothing (aside from the jeans I bought...but they are uncomfortable).
I wear my TNA (aritzia) pants a lot. They were expensive, and I am kinda angry that I am probably stretching them...but they are sooo damn comfy!!! I also went to Stitches, and bought their black, yoga stretchy pants, and they are constantly worn. The Great Canadian Super-Store has "Joe" shirts...that are made to be "baggy"...and I am still able to fit in them. I also wore a lot of flowing tank tops....I just looked for styles that are meant to be baggier, and bought them. I found that some of the cheaper places, like Stitches, and Old Navy carried these styles at a decent price..
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
Ahh thanks guys, it's nice to know you feel my pain, and great suggestions.
I'm in that awkward stage right now where people can't tell if I'm pregnant or just have a belly. Actually, I can't even tell! It's a bit too early for me to be showing (I know you do sooner with subsequent pregnancies though), but I seem to be showing quite a bit some days, and not at all other days. Maybe it's all in my head. LOL
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
With my first pregnancy I had a hard time finding affordable maternity clothes. I wore my reg. clothes as long as I could, then started wearing some of my husbands. I finally splurged and bought a couple maternity tops and jeans. With my second pregnancy though, I lucked out. My cousin had just had her 3rd and was done having kids, so she gave me all her maternity clothes.
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
i got alot of hand me down maternity clothes from my aunt and she was pregnant with twins the year before i got pregnant... but other than that i just bought larger sized regular clothes and tried on the sizes that i was unsure about as i got bigger... i did wear my regular clothes for as long as i possibly could before going out and buying new reg clothes as i got bigger... (i weighed 120 when i got pregnant and by the time i was 6months i looked like i was carrying twins!!!) and i wore alot of skirts and flowy things when i was pregnant too... it kept me from getting too subconscious about how big i was getting and i loved the feel of the flowy things on my skin lol i hope this helps out hun for everyone that is having this trouble!

Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
I just found these kickass instructions for turning regular old pants in to maternity pants if you can sew! Looks pretty easy. I don't have the time or energy to actually try it but I thought I should post it for anyone else who might.

Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
Thanks so much for those instructions. I'd for sure be using it in the future.
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
I did have a few pairs of pants and a few shirts, but mostly I wore yoga pants, pajama pants, pretty much anything with a strechy waistband. I do agree with pp's that maternity clothes are wayway over priced. One thing I did with jeans for a long time, is wrap a rubber band or a hair binder or something around the button of some jeans, and then thread it through the button loop and loop it around the button again. So when they got too tight I could just wear them like that and adjust the rubber band as necessary, ha! Although you do want to wear a longer shirt to hide it.
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
I am currently living in a lot of my husbands shirts, sweaters. Most of the "maternity" shirts I have bought, dont fit!
Also, the jeans are super uncomfortable now, and I am living in Yoga pants. Honestly, black yoga pants are a life saver for me!
Re: Maternity clothes and alternatives?
I went to the salvation army and got a bunch of oversized shirts. I've never been pregnant before so I have no idea what kind of belly I'm going to get. I also got 3 pairs of sweatpants from Value Village and I've been wearing pajama pants 24/7. (Though the south park, family guy, KISS, and Pink Floyd pajama pants get me some awkward stares in public) But now that I got a little belly, I almost cried as I ripped all of my shirts out of my dresser and put them into the dresser I have put aside for baby when he/she comes. My dresser is pretty much empty. I put all the plus size shirts and pajama pants in my drawers as well as my band t-shirts I'm probably going to grow out of in the near future. I wish they had maternity clothes at Value Village. I keep my eye out all the time. They just don't have anything affordable at the maternity shops here. There's really nothing in Canada. My prediction is that by the time I'm 6-7 months pregnant, I'm not even going to be able to wear my medium sized shirts. I've even started wearing my SO's shirts because they are bigger, but I don't want to stretch them out.
