I've never watched American Idol (or Canadian Idol for that matter!) but I was just reading an article in an old magazine while waiting for a friend the other day, and I was kind of surprised to see all the young moms on it! Did a bit of Googling, I already knew that the 3rd season winner was Fantasia Barrino, who is a single mom that had her son at 16 (17?).
Anyways out of the 13 contestants this season, I guess 3 of them were young moms. Alexis Grace has apparently been voted off since the article I read, but she is 21 and has a 2-year-old. Megan Joy Corkrey is a single mom to a 2-year-old. And at 24, Lil Rounds has 3 kids (not sure their ages, but unless she has multiples I figure she must have started at 21 at the latest).
Anyways I thought that was neat! Seems like a disproportionate number of them are young moms compared with the general population. I wonder if that's a coincidence or if one of the things they look for in a contestant is someone with an interesting story?
I think its just a coincidence since like 100's of thousands try out. But I absolutely love american idol! I've been watching it since the very beginning!!!! I loved Alexis Grace too! I voted for her every week she was on there. I don't care too much for Megan and think Alexis was muuuch better than her and so was that oil rig guy, but she does have a good voice! And Lil is one of my favorites! Its really neat tho and a great opportunity for them since in no way does the winner always do the best. Look at Daughtry, he placed 4th!
