I just read the fourth book, and even though I was less than enthusiastic about the first three, I really dug the last one. And, in it, Bella becomes a mother at 18 with a very positive portrayal. Anyone else read this?

I loved the fourth book!

I loved the fourth book!

I loved all four books. And

I loved all four books. And the movie. Not fond of the guy they chose for Edward, however Jacob is totally HOT. (still team edward, though). Bella does get pregnant at 18.....however they do make a point of the two of them not having any sexual contact until AFTER she get's married...which, I really had a hard time beleiving (vampire crazy powers or not). I think they Author still did get flack for the character's having sex, though. Sttill LOVED the books though!

I can't imagine the author

I can't imagine the author getting flack for the sex scenes. It's a young adults' book, not a children's book and it's not any more graphic than one would see on tv. ::rolls eyes:: I haven't seen the movies yet. I've heard there's quite the outcry about racism affecting the casting. Here's a link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NatNews/message/48329

There are still parents in

There are still parents in this world that beleive their teenaged young adults, should not be exposed to sex. Kinda scary. I just read the article. I wonder why they would have to go ahead and do that?? They used a pretty diverse cast, with Bella's friend's and such...I don't see why thy would'nt hire Native Americans.......I still think that the Jacob character is friggen gorgeous...

stephenie meyer is a mormon

stephenie meyer is a mormon who doesn't agree with sex before marriage, and believes sex should be mainly for procreation. once you know that, it becomes apparent that bella's pregnancy was the only way that storyline would possibly go. I read all four books, and got really irritated at parts because it just became so hard to ignore the religious overtone. the whole "don't do what's natural, do what's RIGHT!" theme was just so heavy handed.

Ooo definatly. I thought it

Ooo definatly. I thought it was soo bizzarre that a couple with so much chemistry, was not having participating in any sexual activity..I mean, it WAS covered up with the whole "vampire not being able to control his desire to kill" Bella, thing...but still...wasn't buying it!

I thought she was Mormon,

I thought she was Mormon, since I saw that she went to Brigham Young, but I also really noticed how much sexual agency Meyer gave Bella. A lot of young adult fiction show teen girls as having sex, because they want popularity, or love, or something other than sex. I thought it was great to see her as wanting sex, particularly to continue to show her as sexual right after she became a mother - a time in a woman's life when a lot of people don't see her as a sexual being. The waiting until marriage thing? I read an article in Bitch magazine where they called in abstinence porn. Heh. But seriously? I liked how it portrayed Bella's sexuality. In a sea of young adult fiction that portrays the motivations teens have for sex being popularity, trying to win, low self-esteem, or anything other than having a sex drive, it was nice that she was shown as a woman who wanted sex, who continued to want sex even shortly after the birth of her child - a time when society often doesn't see women as sexual. And the waiting until marriage part - I find it believable if only because of their ages. It's not like they're 30 and waiting for marriage. And I'm currently reading The Host by Stephanie Meyer, where she implies that her 17 year old character had sex with her 26 year old boyfriend using birth control, so I really don't think she made her characters wait until marriage and then promptly have a kid just due to her religious beliefs.

I liked the way it was done.

I liked the way it was done. I think it's a ridiculous reality that young people who are waiting get married just so they can have sex. I didn't like how creepy/controlling Edward was.
