Surgery (Anasthesia question)

So as I said Theo was born with Polydactyly, he has a bit of an extra thumb, a skin tag hanging off his real thumb. It has no bone and it will be easy to remove because it's just hanging off by a small piece of skin.

We met with the plastic surgeon two days ago, and he says he wants to remove it before Theo is 3 months old because then he moves around less.

He also wants to do it under local anasthetic. He said if he waits until later, around 10 months like we were told initially, that it would have to be under general anasthesia.

I don't like the idea of general anasthesia on a baby, but I'm also iffy about local anasthesia.

Local does not work for me. I've had it tried 3 times, once for a biopsy, once for a tooth extraction and after my childbirth with Theo for the stitches. It did not work any of the times. For my tooth extraction they actually tried like 12 needles in total, and NONE of them took at all. I could still feel everything. I ended up getting it pulled anyways because I was already there and already had it partially done, but for the rest I had to be scheduled for general.

I'm just iffy, because how do I know if Theo can take local either?

With myself I can tell it hasn't worked and can choose whether or not to proceed with it or to reschedule for general. With Theo he's too young to know if it has taken with him, I mean he can't TELL me, and the idea of giving him a needle, having it not work, and then having him go through surgery feeling it all..

But I don't know. Does anyone know if things like local anasthetic is a hereditary thing? If not I'm worrying for nothing. Is general anasthetic okay for babies? I'd be worried he wouldn't wake up.

What would you guys do?

Surgery (Anasthesia question)

There's always a risk with things like that. But, I'd avoid general anesthetic if possible. Is it possible to use the local anesthetic and do a small test for pain sensitivity before proceeding? I mean, it would hurt him a bit if it didn't take, but not as much as the whole surgery.

Surgery (Anasthesia question)

Talk to the dr about it. Let him know that you have had it several times and none of it worked. I'm not sure if it is heriditary or not. Both my boys went under general anasthetic at 5 1/2 months old. It was extremely hard and nerve wracking no matter what kind you use. I know that the general that they used on both boys was very safe and easier than using local because of the fact that there was no chance that they would accidentally move and mess it up. Their surgery was a little more complicated though. I'm sorry you have to go through this with him.

Surgery (Anasthesia question)

My son and I have polydactyly- of the little fingers or toes- not the thumbs. When my son was born- he had extra fingers with no bones. The nurses "tied them off" with string until the blood was cut off and they fell off. It seemed barbarically painful- but they told me it had to be done. I wish now that I had been more of an advocate and asked for them to use anesthesia or something! So I'm glad that you're considering this with your son. I still think local anesthesia's got less risk than general. If you can let the anesthesioligist know your concerns, perhaps they can watch your son closely for signs of pain and stop if necessary. It should be quick and easy... I hope everything goes well.
