WIC is being stupid. I'm thinking about buying a second hand electric pump, but I don't know what I'm looking for or how I would have to clean it once I got it. Did anyone buy a pump second hand here? Any resources anyone has on doing this?

isn't wic supposed to give you a free one if you're on it? i got a double electric pump. a medelo at that. i just sign a sheet. as for a second hand one. i had a hand pump that a close friend gave me. she only used it once or twice. but i boiled it in water to clean it. i dunno if you're supposed to do that or not but i did because she was a close friend and i knew she didn't have anything nasty.
I've seen second hand pumps at second-hand children's clothing shops. I also was given one from adcaela's mom - I'll check if I still have it, and if I do it's yours!
Honestly, though, hand expressing worked better than any pump I ever used.
omg really? thats why i stopped breast feeding my 1st son. i didn't have a pump bc i didn't have a place to store the expressed milk at school. i was in marching band and when we would go on over nite trips while all my friends were at the pool i was in the shower crying bc it hurt so bad to do it myself! i wish it hadn't tho bc i wouldve bf longer
i had two second hand pumps and you just have to wash the parts that detach you can sterilize them by boiling them or dishwasher or whatever too.
Do you mind if I ask why WIC won't give you one?
It's not that they wouldn't theoretically give me a pump. It's the horribly long waiting list. There isn't even an open spot on WIC for a breastfeeding mother for a couple months. The woman I spoke to said that there was a waiting list for a breast pump and that since my kid would be starting solids around when I went back to school, I wouldn't be a priority to get a pump. Not that I'm not applying anyway, but I want to start pursuing other options.
By the way, thanks Hilary! I've tried hand expression, but it hasn't worked well for me.
I can see if my sister is done with my pump..
Thanks Charlie!
i liked hand expressing but when we got the pump i just diamantled it and boiled the parts. good luck!!!
stupid wic!
i didnt buy one, but i did sell mine to a resale store.
there are ways you can sterilize them. you can dishwash the pieces, and ameda makes microwave sterilization bags.
i am sure it is safe. and you can probably get a much better price on a used one.
i would suggest kicking wic's butt about a new one first though. it took my friend a long time to get one from wic for free, but she finally got it and loved it.
you can also express by hand if all else fails
