Anyone heard of him? He's an author, quit amazing actually ... he was born with abnormal build up of fluid on his brain, had surgery and they thought he would die or be severly disabled, but he grew up fine except for seizures.

He learned to bread at age 3!!! And went to college, he's written many poems, short stories and wrote the play, "Smoke Signals" which was actually a first film in America that was written and directed by a Native American. We are having a discussion and small project on him in my Cross Culture Lit, so I thought he was a good person to bring up & ask ... the beginning of the class we read "Superman and Me" which was really sad, but good. I actually have it quoted on a paper I am writing about racism and appropriation to culture (my final in that class). I also quot naivete in it (with permission)! I am going to post it up.

Most of the books I read now are either about native history or written by native americans Smile sherman alexie is great. Just so you know he's releasing his third book on Wednesday, called Flight.

That's so funny - I was just going to post about him when I saw this thread! I'm reading "Reservation Blues" right now for a class I'm taking and so far I love it. I saw the movie "Smoke Signals" when I was younger, although I don't really remember it, and I didn't know it had anything to do with him until I read your post. Do any of y'all have particular favorites of his books that you've enjoyed? I definitely want to check out more of his stuff...

i heard him speak when i was in college. i had read some of his work prior to that. he was very outspoken/controvercial/politial. i was expecting this, but i think most people were completely shocked 1. because they thought they were coming to listen to a talk by a fiction writer about his work and 2. it was not too long after 9/11. if anyone has the chance, you may be interested in some of his essays on current events like the iraq war etc. his website is http://www.fallsapart.com/index.html
