I've been robbed by my own fucking SISTER!

Okay, so I was saving for a car, right? Most of the money was coming from my tax return. When I got the tax return back in May, the bank I was closest to was the one where I have the joint bill paying account with my sister. Being a good friend and not wanting to ask my friend to run all the way across town where I have my personal account, I just deposited it into the joint one. I told Carolyn I did it, but didn't write it in the book so we wouldn't count on it being there. Once I got a chance I'd move it to my account.

Well, being the procrastinator I am, I didn't jump on it quickly. Friday I called the bank just to be sure before I wrote the check to transfer the money to my bank. Why is it I only have a balance of 189.00?? Yes, the bitch took over two THOUSAND dollars from me! TWO MUTHERFUCKING THOUSAND DOLLARS. AND she hadn't been making her deposits into the joint account the last two paychecks, so all the bills were being paid by ME. She's been living here FREE for the past month, and redecorating her BEDROOM with MY MONEY.

Why the FUCK is MY FAMILY treating me like I have no right to be pissed?? HellO my mother cried and called us thieves and threw things for TWO HOURS when she dropped TEN BUCKS from her jeans, but if I'm not uberpolite and forgiving to the fucking thief I'M the horrible person!!!!!

I am going to kill someone if I don't get out of this apartment.

Is there no way at all you can get the money back? What do you mean you have to be nice to her? I wouldnt. I would try and get that money, and kick her out of the apartment right away.

I can't get the money. What she did was write checks out of our account, so the money is gone. She said she'd pay me back, so I'm supposed to act like everything is hunky fucking dorey.

please do not use the B word. I know your upset.

Well dont have a joint account with anyone ever again. I know this must REALLY suck but its hard to trust people, even your own family sometimes. (my dad used to steal from me and my sis - drug problem-).

Also can she return anything she bought, or do something to give you the money back ASAP. Like work and give you all of her money?

Can you move out on your own or no? Maybe you need to do that.

Sorry about the word. I x-posted from my lj, I thought I'd cleaned it all up. I would never just straight type that on this site.

The joint checking was, and I think still is, a good idea. We both (well, we were supposed to) deposit $300 every paycheck so then there would be money for bills before we had a chance to run out, so then she couldn't ever tell me she didn't have enough for bills, the money was already there. The mistake I made was trusting her with my tax return. At this point she's supposed to start making her deposits again and give me the rest of her check, about 250 every 2 weeks.

Can you make the checking account only accessable by both of you together? Like, you both have to sign off on the checks, or withdrawl slips? Or, could you have an account that is just yours that she deposits into?

I know nothing will get your money back. I would be shaking with rage if I were you, too.

Don't ever share an account with anyone (not even a BF) or trust anyone financially ever again. This shit happens all the time.

That's awful. I'm glad she's making arrangements to repay you...but the fact that your sister would do that to you is almost worse than a stranger ripping you off.

I'm so sorry.

I never thought about that. In ways it is inconvenient but it wont let this happen again.

I'd say to take her to a small claims court. Even though you two shared an account, she didn't have permission to that money, and you could prove that it was your tax return and not mutual funds that you deposited. Just like if you give someone your bank card and your pin number for emergencies only and they go on a spending spree, it'll probably go through court. If that's not an option (lawyer fees unless you can get legal aid, time, etc), get her to sign a piece of paper saying that she knows she owes you this money and this is how she's going to repay you back and have her sign it, so if she bails, you can consider court afterwards.

I'm sorry she did this to you, that's a really shitty thing for anyone to do, but would probably hurt even more since it's family.

Agreed. Someone I know had a baby with a man. When her father passed, he left her money for her family. BD started drugs and took every dime. Now she's a single mother trying to get by on her own.

Sick people.

That right there is what pisses me off the most. She's got no kids, just her own selfish body to take care of. She and I had it out today, she's giving me all the money from her paychecks aside from what's deposited for bills. She doesn't have any checks anymore, and she's babysitting every saturday night for Matt and my friend's two kids. I'm moving in with said friend as soon as I have the money back, maybe sooner. That really will be a better situation for me, too. I still can't get over how violated I feel, but it's a step toward feeling my safety again. I tell you, it feels like my identity was stolen.

First off I'm really sorry this has happened to you. I work in a credit union and in some of our trainings they have said that family or close friends are the number 1 chance of fraud happening to you. People are very sick.
Now the reason for the quote. In my credit union if you give your visa or debit card to ANYONE not on your account then you have just signed over any rights you have to that money. If they clear out your account for any reason there is nothing you can do about it. You gave them your account access. It sucks but that is how it works here. I have never worked in any other financial institution before so I don't know for sure how they work, but I'm pretty sure it is fairly similar.
Good Luck.

LAJSFD;LASDJFLASJDF :x  :x  I'm like, fucking pissed off for you. Especially since you said your family is acting like you shouldn't be mad. Fuck that.. I know how that is, it sucks. Just stay on her ass until you get every cent back, and if you don't maybe try doing what naivete said and go to a small claims court or something.

I hope there is some way you can manage without having her name on the account. I wouldn't trust her again. I've seen this happen to my friends and my family. It might be better to keep the account in only your name from now on.

My BD has a joint account with his mom and it scares me sometimes. She doesn't take anything from him and occasionally she deposits stuff into it when he's running low. He likes the benefits his mom gets with her senior checking, but it makes me uncomfortable. I think he can trust her...but it's a little weird. I don't even have a joint account with him.
